Buqui Bichi Brewing: Bringing Sonoran Flavor to Arizona

In the heart of Arizona’s brewing scene lies Buqui Bichi Brewing, a testament to Sonoran craftsmanship and brotherly ambition. Founded in 2016 by Luis and Ramon Osuna, who’ve turned their passion for homebrewing into award-winning taprooms.

“We figured, we need to share this,” Luis Osuna, Co-Founder and CEO said, “all of our lives we just [had] one style of beer, different brands, but in general just the one style. [We said,] we need to have the people from Hermosillo, from Sonora try … a wider variety of styles of beer. [And we said] why not, let’s try it.”

From their first taproom in Hermosillo Sonora to five locations in Mexico and two in the Valley – both opened last year, Buqui Bichi has swiftly made its mark, offering a unique Sonoran-style brewing experience to Arizona. “We want it to be recognized as a Sonoran brewery.”

And when it comes to the name Buqui Bichi? “It’s very well remembered,” Osuna said, “and people seem to like it. We’re very happy with it.”

In an interview with Phoenix New Times, brother Ramon explained that “buqui bichi” is a common expression in Sonora, having roots in an indigenous language, and means “little guy running around without his clothes on in the middle of the summer” – a lighthearted, humorous phrase that embodies the atmosphere they want to create with their taprooms.

Their dedication has garnered recognition, with Buqui Bichi being hailed as the “Best Medium Brewery” in Mexico in 2019 and Mexico’s best large brewery in 2022.

Transitioning to the Arizona market was a natural progression. “It made sense because of the Latin influences in the Valley,” he explained, “we feel very close to the region.”

Osuna acknowledges the challenge of getting noticed in a crowded city like Phoenix but remains optimistic about their quality products resonating with patrons. “People think we have a competitive product.”

Their beer offerings include the Bitachera, described as a “perfect Hazy IPA,” and the Talega, a coffee stout offering a “balanced mix between a beer with body and strong aroma with that touch of coffee that softens the intensity.”

Beyond brews, their food menu features Mexican-inspired delights like aguachiles, sopes, and well-crafted tacos and burgers, such as La Valiente Burger, showcasing Chihuahua cheese, bacon, roasted tomato, grilled jalapeno, and fresh cilantro.

Looking ahead, Buqui Bichi is set on solidifying its presence in Arizona, “[we want to] establish ourselves here in the states, as a regional brand in Arizona.”
