Mayor Beauty in Charge: Alexis Hermosillo’s Trailblazing Leadership in El Mirage

Mayor Alexis Hermosillo – as a proud fifth-generation resident of El Mirage and having been born and raised in the city – embodies the spirit of service and leadership in her community.

Throughout her career, she’s had extensive experience in several public service roles, including her work with the largest public transportation company in Maricopa County and the U.S. House of Representatives as a District Representative for Arizona Congressional District 3.

“[El Mirage] is a place that I’ve called home all my life,” she said, “and it’s just a joy and a privilege to be able to serve my community, especially the community that raised me.”

She’s currently on her second term and reflects on the lessons that came from her first term. “Learning, bonding with your colleagues,” she explains, “learning other people’s leadership styles, and building relationships that were crucial for our city to progress.”

During her first campaign run, El Mirage saw voting records.

“One of the things that comes to mind about feeling most proud about my career is getting people more engaged and more aware of the politics and policies that influence their day-to-day,” she says. “Getting people to advocate for themselves, having people’s voices heard.”

At just 34 years old, Mayor Hermosillo is aware of, and has overcome preconceived notions surrounding her age. “I think definitely my age and maybe how I present myself does attract attention for better or for worse,” she says. “Once people talk to me, they see that I’m nice, kind, approachable, and personable. I think that has worked in my favor, just being myself truly.”

Mayor Hermosillo’s journey into politics was unexpected but rooted in her love of helping people. “I actually never saw myself getting into politics,” she admits. “I always saw that in the form of volunteerism and giving to others.”

She also credits her background in pageantry, crowned Miss Belleza Latina International in 2014, for preparing her for the world of politics. “My experience in pageantry propelled me and prepared me for politics because in pageantry, you’re ultimately competing against yourself,” she explains.

As a role model to young Latinas, Mayor Hermosillo encourages them to follow their dreams and have the courage to pursue their passions. “Don’t ever take no for an answer,” she advises. “If something like this is deep within your heart, then do it.”

Outside of her duties as Mayor, Mayor Hermosillo cherishes time spent with her loved ones and exploring new interests. “What really brings me joy and what I like to do to help me recharge is honestly spending time with my family, my friends, and my animals. I have three cats and four dogs (laughs).”

“I just recharge by being with my parents, inviting over my vecina to have some coffee to talk about whatever’s happening in our lives and just being normal,” she said, “just being a homebody sometimes is the best thing I can do in my downtime.”

Looking ahead, Mayor Hermosillo’s focus remains on the growth and development of El Mirage, both professionally and personally. “My biggest focus professionally is the growth of services to our community,” she says. “And on the personal side, just enjoying life.”

As Mayor Alexis Hermosillo continues to lead with passion and dedication, her impact on El Mirage and beyond is sure to be enduring.
