At a time where food trucks and street food stalls are all the rage, La Frontera (also known as La Frontera Comida Mexicana) has been providing hungry customers fantastic Mexican food out of their truck for over a decade. Located near Central Phoenix on 16th street and Van Buren, La Frontera offers a variety of Mexican food staples such as tacos, burritos, tortas, and quesadillas. Each of these items can be made with whatever choice of meat you prefer. There is almost an endless amount of meat options as La Frontera offers the popular Carne Asada, Pollo Asado, and Al Pastor but also lengua, carnitas, barbacoa, chicharron, or fried pork rinds, and cabeza.
Every plate comes accompanied with a side of lime wedges to drench over your food and some thickly sliced cucumbers. Each dish also comes with a tangy avocado sauce and salsa. (Quick tip: make sure to ask for a side of grilled onions and peppers free of charge!)
One of La Frontera’s best and signature items has to be their Tacos De Cabeza. Popular in the state of Sonora, Tacos de Cabeza consists of tacos filled with steamed and shredded cow’s head meat. Now some of you may be thinking why eat the head of the cow? Well besides being inexpensive, the head of the cow is actually very meaty, fatty, and full of flavor. So when the meat is braised or steamed, it becomes fall-apart tender, and a juicy piece of meat to have in tacos. The Cabeza meat can then be combined with toppings such as red salsa, chopped onions, and cilantro or “con todo” (with everything) as the wonderful La Frontera staff will surely ask.
What may look like an abandoned parking lot behind a Jack in the Box is actually a hidden gem in a part of the city some may avoid. Whether you try out La Frontera’s food early in the morning or after a night of fun, it is guaranteed you will have some of the best tacos in Phoenix.
