Grand Avenue in Phoenix is quickly becoming a place where small businesses and the arts community can come together. El Charro Hipster has merged both of these ideas into a wonderful community space that brings not only art and community but some of the best Mezcal and Tequila drinks in Phoenix.
Started in 2018 by Geraldine Peralta and her parents Francisco and Azul, El Charro Hipster has become a must-visit whenever you’re strolling through Grand Avenue in downtown Phoenix.
Francisco Peralta created and curated a drink menu based on Mexico’s native spirits such as mezcal, tequila, and sotol and his family’s travels around the world. One of the standout drinks from the menu is the Antonio Banderas. If you have never tried Mezcal before, this drink is a wonderful introduction to the Agave spirit. Made with mezcal, iced chunks of hibiscus, lime juice, cucumber bitters and served on a glass rimmed with Tajin, the Antonio Banderas provides a wonderful balance between the fruity and sweet Jamaica and the smoky earth Mezcal and makes for a refreshing drink at any time of the year.
Besides their alcoholic drinks, El Charro Hipster also offers organic and fair trade coffee, juices, smoothies, and for the hungry, empanadas, tacos, and sandwiches. The restaurant also uses compostable plates and utensils in order to help the environment and reduce landfills.
During weekdays the restaurant also welcomes numerous local artists that often perform stand-up comedy and music. The restaurant’s walls are inundated with various art pieces such as a Freida Kahlo mural, a framed painting of Mexican comedian “Tin Tan”, and several local art pieces.
After surviving a turbulent 2020 that forced El Charro Hipster to close and expand their space to meet the social distancing guidelines set by the city, El Charro Hipster is now thriving along with a Grand Avenue that is looking to bounce back and provide a haven for the community and arts in Phoenix.
