A Tiny Taste of Mexico City on 18th Street

By Ramon Chávez

La Bohemia is a Mexico City-inspired coffee shop located near 18th Street and McDowell in the fast growing Mcdowell Miracle Mile. The shop’s minimalist decor lends itself for a perfect Instagram-worthy spot but here, La Bohemia’s coffees are the main attraction.

Owners Alejandro Larios and Carla Chavarría have curated a menu of specialty coffees, espresso, and cafe de olla that reflect the coffee culture of Mexico’s capital.

The minimalist decor is filled with artifacts collected from the owner’s trips to Mexico and this decor successfully reflects the minimalist contemporary side of Mexico City.

The small menu is filled with many highlights. Among these is the Miel Latte which could be ordered both hot and iced. The latte is made with Arizona Mesquite honey, 2 shots of espresso, and garnished with Himalayan pink salt and pink peppercorns. The drink is light, refreshing, and just sweet enough to not overpower the palate.

La Bohemias’s version of the classic Mocha aims to mimic the hot chocolate found in many Mexican households. The drink is made with Mexican cacao, cinnamon, and raw sugar and can be served with espresso or without it. Owner Alejandro Larios stated in an interview that the shop’s most popular drink is the Café de Olla Latte. The drink is made with a double espresso shot, choice of milk, and syrup all made in-house that has flavor notes of cinnamon, piloncillo, and citrus that creates a traditional Cafe de Olla taste.
