Thunderbird Lounge brings an old school 70’s vibe to the Melrose District

The Melrose District in Phoenix is home to many fantastic locally owned businesses and bars. Thunderbird Lounge would join this list when they opened in the historic Wagon Wheel Building in 2019.

Thunderbird Lounge was brought to life by the trio of Jeremiah Gratza from Stateside Presents (a local concert promotions company), Jacob Wiedmann from Phoenix-based the Hot Guy Band, and Brett Boyles from Crescent Ballroom.

The trio of owners decided to construct a 70’s inspired bar that went for a midwestern dive bar vibe. Inside the bar, you can find wood paneling lining up the walls, old-school-style lighting and lamps, and vintage couches and booths. Guests of Thunderbird can also hang out and play on the free retro arcade games and select their favorite tunes on the jukebox.

Drinkers can sip on RC Cola and throwback snacks flown in from the Midwest such as Montucky Cold Snacks, Jay’s Potato Chips, and O-Ke-Doke popcorn. If you’re looking for alcoholic drinks, the Thunderbird offers well drinks that stay around the 5 dollar range. The beer and seltzers list feature local favorites like Mother Road’s Tower Station IPA, the Thunderbeer, (The Lounge’s own lager), and seltzers such as White Claws and Topo Chico’s.

Another great amenity of Thunderbird Lounge is the huge backdoor patio that offers ample seating, a huge Christmas decorated cactus, and a grassy area for events and relaxing. There is a bean bag toss and a giant Jenga for groups of friends to partake in.

For food, the bar itself serves only the snacks mentioned before, but don’t worry there are plenty of restaurants around the bar and food carts that make weekly appearances to satisfy everyone’s craving.

If you’re looking for a relaxing place with an old-school feel, definitely stop by Thunderbird this week and check out this amazing local gem.
