Rhythm of the Arts will present Sugar Skull! A Día de Muertos Musical Adventure at the Madison Center for the Arts on September 13. The bilingual, bicultural musical for young audiences and families follows 12-year-old Vita Flores, who struggles to understand why her family is preparing such a big celebration for loved ones who have passed away. Her perspective changes when a candy skeleton named Sugar Skull comes to life, sending Vita on a magical journey to discover the meaning and traditions behind Día de Muertos.
Along the way, Vita encounters ancestors, a sorrowful sorceress, mischievous Chaneques and the iconic Catrina Calavera as she works to uncover the pieces needed to complete her family’s ofrenda. Featuring traditional music and dance from Mexico, Sugar Skull! uses storytelling, humor and live performance to introduce audiences to the cultural traditions surrounding Día de Muertos. The production offers families an opportunity to experience Mexican music and folklore while following Vita’s journey of understanding family, memory and honoring those who came before her.
